MLB 07 The Show: Spring Training

Ahhh Spring training, the time of year where every team is on an equal footing and the games mean nothing.  It’s the time of year where veterans work off the beer guts they gathered over the winter and rookies show up in camp trying to prove they belong. (Just as a note, I am the GM of the Pittsburgh Pirates, but one day after being hired I took a homeless guy named Hector off the street, told him he was in charge of all the personnel and I quickly left to hunt baby seals on the Ice flows of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and thus have no control over the team).

The month of March went by with no major trades or player moves, the stats don’t count so we won’t bother with them here.  We will first take a look at Florida and the Grapefruit League:

18.       Cardinals                      9          21        .300                 13

Certainly the Yankees had an impressive spring, but overall there were very few surprises.  Perhaps the biggest two, last years World Series Teams the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals, surprised some people with such as slow start.  But these standings mean nothing and each team had it’s own goals in preparing for the season.  How well that training pays off will become clear in April.

In Arizona, we again find very balanced standings.  The Cubs with all the money they spent on Free Agents doing well in the desert.  Projected division contenders Milwaukee, Oakland and San Diego got off to slow starts, as is often the case for good teams in March.  There were no trades or any player movement in this league either.  Teams were focused on what they have already as opening day approached.
